A new way of journaling for PMDD, that's not all about the SYMPTOMS.

It's time to call a truce with PMDD.

That starts by listening to symptoms with curiosity. Symptoms = information

Symptoms are the language of the body. They are more like warning lights, begging for our attention and care.

While symptom tracking is essential both for diagnosis and gauging the effectiveness of any type of treatment, we talked about ZOOMING OUT and seeing what other information the cycle has to offer. I know, I know... that's a tall order when symptoms cast their shadow over everything. But with curiosity, you may be surprised about what you discover.

We are CYCLICAL BEINGS living in a non-cyclical world.

What the heck does that mean?

Our bodies, needs, capacity, limits, and strengths are DIFFERENT throughout the cycle. Yet, we are conditioned to push through and meet society's demands of us, as if we are always the same.

"... the cycle itself isn't the problem; instead, it's REVEALING a problem. To see the cycle as the enemy can set you up for more suffering. But working with and within its rhythmic imperatives can be your foundational path to healing." -Wild Power

3 Reasons to Keep a Menstrual Cycle Journal

If you have PMDD, it's essential to track your menstrual cycle with an app to easily determine the day of your cycle and other patterns.

However, there are some things that an app just doesn't quite capture. Most of our cycles do best with an app (our faves are Natural Cycles or Me vs. PMDD) and a WRITTEN journal. You can't underestimate the power of pen and paper.

  1. Identity trends and patterns in your cycle so you can plan and cope ahead
  2. Decode the potential biological reasons for your symptoms to create a more targeted lifestyle and treatment plan plan.
  3. Tune into your unfiltered needs, strengths, and even power throughout your menstrual cycle.

Is journaling something you've always intended to do but never quite get there?

You've probably heard from your friend, mother, and therapist that journaling is a good idea. But a big empty page can feel intimidating, or like it's going to take a lot of time.

Keep it simple with the following journal prompts.

  • "I'm feeling....": Note your primary emotions right in the moment or jot down the overall tone or emotional themes throughout the day.
  • "I'm thinking about....": Unload your twirling thoughts or worries, the voice of your inner critic. Plus, jot down ideas and moments of inspiration.
  • "In my body I notice....": Record physical sensations, changes in appetite, sleep, or libido, areas of pain or discomfort, and even your poop and digestion!
  • "I wish I didn't have to....": List any of those daunting "shoulds" that pop up. It may surprise you how often you notice these, and how often you listen.
  • "I'd really like to....": Notice your unfiltered needs and desires. What do you naturally want to do and how does it align with your intrinsic strengths that day?

Use the Musings and Moments sections to journal any other random thoughts or moments of gratitude (or frustration) that you want to get out on paper.

Think of it like a daily date with your menstrual cycle.

Here's how to get started:

  1. Print off copies the Daily Journal or use the prompts in your own journal or notebook.
  2. Create a daily ritual or routine where you can spend a few minutes to ground yourself and complete your journal each day.
  3. Feel free to add or remove questions and make it all your own. You do you, Warrior!

Note: Your cycle day is the day of your period, with Day 1 being the first day you bleed.
